Intern Rights and Responsibilities
At the Counseling Center, we are committed to the provision of quality services to the University Community and to the professional growth and development of all members of the Counseling Center staff. Each staff person has the right and privilege of being treated with respect and dignity and the responsibility to foster an environment where this right and privilege is maintained. In order to best meet our goals, we hold the following rights and responsibilities critical to the functioning of our internship program:
Interns have the right to:
- work with a staff that behaves in a manner consistent with the APA ethical guidelines, the policies and procedures of the UNH Counseling Center and the rules, regulations and laws of the State of New Hampshire governing the behaviors of psychologists
- work with a staff that maintains appropriate professional and personal boundaries and gives careful attention to power dynamics
- participate in informed consent which includes reading, understanding and having questions clarified regarding the policies and procedures of the Counseling Center including due process and grievance procedures
- receive of timely, honest, and specific feedback about performance on a regular basis
- be recognized for the training and experience the intern brings with her or him to internship
- provide honest, timely, and specific feedback about their experience of the training program on a regular basis
Interns have the responsibility to:
- behave in a manner consistent with the APA ethical guidelines, the policies and procedures of the UNH Counseling Center and the rules, regulations and laws of the State of New Hampshire governing the behaviors of psychologists
- maintain appropriate professional and personal boundaries and to attend to their part in power dynamics
- participate in informed consent by reading, understanding, and if necessary clarifying the policies and procedures of the Counseling Center including the due process and grievance procedures
- provide honest, timely and specific feedback about their experience of the training program on a regular basis
- maintain openness as a learner and responsiveness to feedback from Counseling Center staff recognizing the training and experience the senior staff bring to the internship training program
- remember their position on campus as a representative of the Counseling Center and understand that activities of a professional nature or related to the work the Counseling Center does on campus must be discussed with senior staff
- meet training expectations through active participation in training, service, and overall activities of the Counseling Center (as outlined in the Intern Manual in general and the Objectives and Curriculum Plan of the doctoral Internship specifically)
