According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a person with a disability is defined as someone with a mental, physical, or emotional impairment that substantially limits one or major life tasks including self-care, engaging in manual activities, walking, seeing, speaking, hearing, breathing, learning and working.  Individuals with learning disabilities, mental illness, or a chronic physical condition are also protected by ADA.

When a person with a disability is qualified to complete the essential tasks of a position, the ADA mandates that a supervisor try to find reasonable accommodations that would facilitate a person with a disability to perform these functions. The reasonable accommodation is meant to decrease or remove unnecessary obstacles between the individual’s skills and the requirements to fulfill the core position responsibilities.

The UNH Counseling Center internship program strives to meet the accessibility needs of intern applicants and interns. The UNH Counseling Center is accessible by ramp and elevator, which is located on the ground floor, east side of the building. There is an accessible restroom on the ground and first floors. During internship year, appropriate assistive technology is available for interns with disabilities.

The UNH Counseling Center is committed to providing other reasonable accommodations to intern applicants and interns with disabilities. Importantly, intern applicants and interns with disabilities must make their needs known to the training director in order to receive accommodations during the interview process and training year respectively.
